Every year For the past few I have attended Sakura Matsuri at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Sakura Matsuri is the celebration of the cherry blossoms. The BBG throws a huge festival which includes dances, karate demonstrations, comedy routines, fashion shows, etc… You can also get some delicious japanese food there for a price. I bought a bento box that was jam packed with yum!
Thankfully this year the trees were in full bloom. With the cold weather NY has been having I was worried that the trees might not be ready like last year. Nothing sadder than a party where the guests of honor show up naked.

It is also great time for photographers as many people come in costume. I especially love that it is so Cosplay friendly. They have a great Cosplay fashion show in the late afternoon on Sundays. Here are a couple of the shots I took. (That’s me in the 1st one)

So I put a bid on a co-op that was accepted and now I am waiting to hear back from the co-op board to see if they will let me live in the building. THEY LORD OVER ME LIKE THE GODS THEY ARE! (or at least that is how they think I should see them) In preparation for the possibility of a move I created “HomeHacking” a Tumblr for tips and hacks about making your home more awesome. I used my cat Peanut as the spokespurrson because the internet loves cats.

Before this morning about very few people had noticed the site and that was OK by me. I never expected it to be hugely popular. It was just a place for me to keep some ideas for myself. Almost like Pinterest. This morning I awoke to find 64 new likes and a handful of new followers.

I knew then what I had to do….

Last week I attended the Game of Thrones Exhibit in NYC. Luckily I was there around 2:30 in the afternoon on a Tuesday so the line was only 2 hours long. Bleh… I realized as I entered that I forgot the memory card for my camera so all the following pictures had to be taken with my iPad. Sorry for the crappy quality.

I received an email from a friend I hadn’t heard from in a while:

I was walking through a park yesterday and on a tree I found a little note that read:

“Dear Fairies,

Please come to Cata’s house on …. for her birthday on April 5 for overnight and lots of days. We’ll have tea and for spring break.

Please do not bring any monsters or elves. Only fairies are invited. We have no treats for monster or elves.

From Cata”

I thought it might be a nice surprise to put a few little fairy related art pieces in a box and send them to her for her birthday. I know it’s really last minute (I’m going to try to make a little puppet), but I thought of you all first and thought maybe you’d like to take part if you have time.

I immediately went outside and grabbed the first stick and leaf I could find. I created a tiny canvas out of these and some yarn and then proceeded to paint a tiny fairy portrait upon it. The strange part is that this is not my first time having this request. A few years ago my father-in-law asked me to paint a few fairy-sized paintings as a present for his niece who he had convinced fairies were real and they sent her presents. I may have to go into the fairy prop business if this continues…

I wonder if I can create a tiny saddle for a corgi? Where am I going to get a corgi…

Nerdy Cooking

So a friend of mine posted a recipe for Lembas (or Waybread), aspecial bread made by the elves in The Lord of the Rings series. The recipe is pretty easy although it calls for honey and then never specifies where to put it. I added it during the milk phase. All in all the result was a scone-like treat that needed a bit more sweet. I think perhaps next time I might top them with honey or spread jam over them. As for right now, they shall make a fun addition to our weekly D&D game.

I have visited a few of these events in the past and usually in my bright pink yukata and geta. A great place to buy supplies for yourself is Pearl River Mart on Broadway. You can also find some fantastic stuff on eBay and if you are willing to pay there is some really beautiful stuff at Kimono House in SoHo.

Now I am not an authority on anything Japan related. I just really like a lot of Japanese stuff like the food and dress. I learned how to wear my yukata and tie my obi from YouTube and I know a smattering of Japanese from my language classes in college. The rest I have learned over time from meeting people. That said if you have any questions or need recommendations please feel free to ask. I will do my best to find the answer for you if I don’t know it myself. Also, if you know of an upcoming event that was not listed here please let me know.

Join me in making tracks for elephants! On April 27, I’ll be participating in the fifth annual WCS Run for the Wild, a 5K run/walk at the Bronx Zoo. This year?s event is dedicated to Earth’s largest land mammals, which face an uncertain future in both Africa and Asia. The funds I raise will go toward the Wildlife Conservation Society’s projects to conserve elephants and other imperiled animals around the globe and at the Bronx Zoo.

Like humans, elephants form strong family bonds and friendships, and go to great lengths to care for and protect their herds. But unfortunately, these majestic creatures face an uncertain future across their range. Persecuted by poachers since prehistoric times for the valuable ivory in their tusks, elephants continue to be shot and killed every day.

With your support, I hope to raise my target of $275 Even $10 will make a big difference for elephants. The donations I collect will help WCS to reduce poaching and protect elephants through ecoguard programs and on-the-ground monitoring efforts in some of their last wild strongholds.

A Super Socks exchange with bonus panties!

This arrived so quick I thought my redditgifter was the Flash! My gifter was apparently inspired by one of my tumblr posts about my Librarian butt (http://nerdykittenpants.tumblr.com/search/butt) so I was totally excited to see that I had not only some awesome superhero socks, but also matching undies! I couldn’t help myself and tried them on immediately!
